The Dual Diagnosis Research and Training Project (2021-2026)

During Year 4 of the Dual Diagnosis Training project, NADD provided training on crisis prevention, intervention, and non-aversive approaches to behavior management. They finalized the curriculum that was developed during Year 3 of the project. They also structured conversations between state agencies and other organizations to develop an approach to collaborate between entities to provide services to complex individuals with dual diagnosis. During Year 5 of the Dual Diagnosis Training project, the work will continue to foster collaboration between state agencies and other organizations to address the needs of complex individuals through a pilot of the Year 4 developed approach. Research will be undertaken to learn about peer-to-peer support programs for families with individuals with dual diagnosis and a peer support program will be developed and piloted over the course of the project year.

Frequently Asked Questions

This project aims to develop and deliver training on crisis prevention, intervention, and post-crisis strategies for individuals with dual diagnoses (developmental disability and mental health). It focuses on implementing effective practices to reduce unnecessary and restrictive placements. The project includes developing training curricula, conducting research on effective state agency collaboration, and piloting integrated service planning.

This initiative is sponsored by the United States Department of Health and Human Services Administration for Community Living and the Florida Developmental Disabilities Council, Inc.

The project runs from September 26, 2025, to September 26, 2026.

The training covers crisis prevention, intervention, and post-crisis engagement strategies.  It also includes a new module focusing on non-aversive approaches to behavior management, including collaborative problem-solving approaches.

The training is designed for organizations serving individuals with dual diagnoses, including schools, non-profit community-based organizations, mobile crisis unit agencies, and potentially conferences. The project aims to train a minimum of 50 individuals with significant behavioral challenges.

The training curricula is developed with input from consultants and reviewed by an advisory committee. Feedback from trained organizations and lessons learned are incorporated to finalize the training materials.

Please contact Dr. Kristin McGill (Project Manager) at DDTraining@thenadd.org to inquire about registration.

All participants will receive a copy of the training materials as part of the registration process. The finalized training curricula, project report, and executive summary will be submitted to the Council by September 26, 2026.

For questions about the project or for more information, please contact Dr. Kristin McGill (Project Manager) at DDTraining@thenadd.org, or Jeanne Farr (Project Director) at jfarr@thenadd.org.
